Vietnam's tourism industry has grown significantly in terms of visitor numbers and income in both local and international markets throughout the years. However, the sector's expansion is putting strain on destinations' natural and cultural preservation. According to experts, because tourism in Vietnam is primarily reliant on abundant natural and cultural resources, assuring green growth and responsibility to the environment and society is the only way for the sector to expand and become a national economic leader.
According to a poll conducted by the Institute for Tourism Development Research under the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT) on foreign visitors' readiness to create sustainable tourism, 76% are eager to decrease holiday waste. 62% are willing to use local products; 45% prefer environmentally friendly transportation; 45% prefer time off outside of peak season; 38% are willing to help local communities; 31% can select a less popular destination; and 28% are willing to limit water consumption while on vacation.
In fact, green consumption is popular not just among international tourists but also among local visitors.
The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to focus on completing institutions and policies on tourism development management in a green and sustainable direction, as well as prioritising green tourism models and products, in a decision issued on July 22, 2022 on a national action plan on green growth in the 2021-2030 period.
The national tourist development strategy till 2030 further highlighted Vietnamese tourism's sustainable and inclusive approach, which is based on green growth and optimising tourism's contributions to sustainable development goals.
